Life as a student can be exciting but it can also be demanding. In a recent Ulster University survey, we found that 64% of students suffer from stress and only 40% know where to seek support. At Ulster, we pride ourselves in the support services we offer students, and understand the value of a helping hand during your most stressing times. In 2016, our annual student survey found that 45% of students identify the pressure of exams as contributing factor to their stress levels.

During student life, you may face personal and academic challenges along the way, and that’s where we can help. We offer a range of services to enable you to cope, helping you make the most of your time at Ulster University. Our professional services are free and confidential for all Ulster University students. When it comes to exam season, here are some of our favourite tips and guidance to help make preparing for exams that little bit easier!

  1. 1. Work smarter, not harder. Set goals and time-limits for your work, doing a little every day.
  2. 2. Listen to instrumental music (no singing!) when revising. Research has shown that this can aid brain productivity and memory retention.
  3. 3. Talk to a friend, family member or a University Councillor (or even your pet) about your day.
  4. 4. Reward yourself after studying; this will give you an incentive to work harder.
  5. 5. Take up daily exercise, even if it’s just some brisk walking. Exercise has been clinically proven to improve mental health.
  6. 6. Clear your mind and meditate with the Headspace app.
  7. 7. Cut your alcohol consumption and increase your water intake.
  8. 8. Get plenty of rest! Don’t burn the candle at both ends by staying up late at night to revise. This will have the reverse effect.

We also have a range of fantastic support services to help you throughout your student life:
